About Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is a city rich in natural resources, history, tourist attractions, and opportunities, perhaps best known for its restorative and relaxing natural hot springs. Originally a vacation destination for only the most exclusive and affluent tourists, Glenwood Springs has become a popular family-friendly spot with a strong community of local businesspeople, adventurers, and creative minds.

Situated at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers and at an elevation of 5,761 feet, Glenwood Springs is located about 160 miles west of Denver and about 40 miles northwest of Aspen. Glenwood Springs is the county seat and the most populated city of Garfield County, Colorado, with a population of 9,614 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The climate is generally mild and can vary within the city, as the hillsides tend to be a bit warmer and drier than areas closer to the rivers.

History of Glenwood Springs

Like many areas in the Roaring Fork Valley, Glenwood Springs was originally home to nomadic Ute Indian tribes and was then settled by homesteaders in the early 1880s. Early settlers, enchanted by the soothing and healing power of the natural hot springs, recognized an opportunity to develop a luxury attraction – and opened the Hot Springs Pool in 1888. To this day, the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort continues to attract the attention of local residents and visitors from all parts of the world. Hotel Colorado then opened in 1893, modeled after an Italian castle and designed to attract wealthy visitors. The idea worked, and presidents and celebrities have stayed at the impressive hotel through the years. Historic Linwood Cemetery is the final resting place of many original pioneers, plus notorious visitors such as western legend Doc Holliday and Harvey Logan (“Kid Curry”), a member of the gang of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Tourism played a major role in the city’s history and continues to influence the town to this day. Mining, railroad expansion, farming, ranching, local commerce, and outdoor recreation have also impacted the development of Glenwood Springs.
