About Aspen

Aspen is both a small, historic town and a world-class destination for ski enthusiasts and appreciators of the arts. From the vibrant downtown living near fine dining, artistic venues, and upscale shopping to all the outdoor recreation and adventure opportunities of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, there’s something for everyone in Aspen, Colorado.

Located in the upper (southeast) end of beautiful Roaring Fork Valley at an elevation of 7,890 ft, Aspen is situated on Colorado’s Western Slope about 11 miles west of the Continental Divide, about 200 southwest from Denver and about 40 miles southeast of Glenwood Springs. Aspen is the county seat and most populated city of Pitkin County, Colorado, with 6,658 residents as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The climate is typical for places of high altitude and intense sunshine: you can expect warm days and cool temperature drops at night.

History of Aspen & Snowmass

Originally home of the Ute Indians, Aspen was named Ute City by its first modern settlers who crossed the Continental Divide seeking silver in 1879 and then renamed Aspen in 1880.

The town continued to flourish as 12,000 – 15,000 miners and their family members came to call it home. But almost as quickly as the town’s population and wealth materialized, it faded as the national economy struggled and silver mining came to an abrupt halt. By 1930, the town was home to only 700 people. About this time, the idea for a ski resort was first born, but this vision was put on hold during World War II.

After the war, Aspen as we know it today began to take shape as members of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division who trained in the area joined with investors Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke to develop one of the world’s best ski resorts. The Paepckes were also instrumental in bringing the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation to Aspen in 1949, an event that introduced artistic and cultural renown to the town. Three more ski areas opened in the 1950s and ‘60s, further solidifying Aspen’s place as a prime skiing spot. The four ski areas are owned by the Aspen Skiing Company and operate collectively as Aspen/Snowmass, with Snowmass being the largest area within the ski resort complex, located near Snowmass Village.

Ideal skiing conditions and a deep devotion to the arts put Aspen on the map and continue to be prime drivers for residents and visitors today who seek out this luxury destination.
